Happy 100th Birthday!
Congratulations to Father Emeric Szlazak on his 100th birthday. Father Emeric is a Franciscan Friar and faithfully served our Parish during Father Nemeth’s and Father Pintye’s tenure as Pastor’s in the 1970’s to 1990’s.
This is a photograph of Father Emeric speaking during Deacon Rudy’s 10-year anniversary party 5-years ago (2012). Father had traveled to Connecticut from his retirement residence in Florida to attend the event.
We continue to wish him well and God’s Blessing.

New Director of Music Announced
MaryRose Garych
August 27, 2017
Mary Rose Garych, the new Director of Music, is very honored and excited to have joined St. Emery’s. She has been performing sacred music for twelve years, and has worked in the Diocese of Bridgeport as an organist, cantor, and soloist at various churches for the past three years. Mary Rose has sung in area parishes since 2005, and sang in a professional liturgical choir for seven years. In her undergraduate music studies, Mary Rose concentrated on choral conducting and pipe organ, and has earned Master’s Degree credits in choral conducting at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. In her role as Director of Music, Mary Rose’s goal is to bring each soul who sings or hears excellent church music to a deeper love of God, and to, ultimately, render Him greater glory.
We warmly welcome Mary Rose to St. Emery’s Parish.
Thank you Anthony Procaccini
We would like to thank Anthony Procaccini for his many years of service as Director of Music at St. Emery’s. Tony brought an excellent quality and variety of music to St. Emery’s music ministry and was also instrumental in expanding the repertoire of musical events that enhanced the role of the ministry. We wish Tony well in all his future endeavors.

St. Stephen’s Feast Day Celebration
Sunday, August 20, 2017
The Parish revived the St. Stephen Feast Day celebration this year on Sunday, August 20th. St. Stephen was the first king of Hungary in 1000-1001. St. Emery was St. Stephen’s son. This feast day is celebrated in Hungary on August 20th.
The event sponsored a special reception on Sunday at noon in the Church Hall featuring the traditional Hungarian dish szalonna. The reception was graciously hosted by Laureen and Nick Pekar.
For those unfamiliar, in the traditional Hungarian style szalonna is prepared by using pork fat skewered on a rod and roasted over an open wood fire (a grill can also be used) . Once it starts to sizzle and drip, the szalonna is removed from the fire and allowed to drip onto a slice of freshly baked bread. The szalonna is returned to the fire and the process is repeated. Fresh tomatoes, sliced cumber, red onion, green peppers or other vegetables are then added to the slice of bread.
This dish was considered to be a peasants’ food since the most important aspect was the fat, discarded by wealthier Hungarians.
Following are several photographs taken during the reception.

St. Patrick and St. Joseph Feast Day Celebration
March 19, 2017
On Sunday, March 19, the Parish sponsored a St. Patrick and St. Joseph’s Feast Day celebration.
One mass was held at 10:00 AM on Sunday followed by a Parish breakfast in the Church Hall to celebrate the lives of St. Patrick and St. Joseph.
During the mass, Father Milan’s Knights of Columbus membership was transferred to St. Emery’s Church by Knights Herb Ramirez, Jim Hasek and Chris Hasek. ‘Sir Knight‘ Father Milan is a Fourth Degree Knight.
.
Madeline Petrone received a blessing from Father Milan in honor of her receiving her Religious Metal from the Girl Scouts during the mass. Madeline completed her Girl Scout Religious badge by working on her booklet on the topic of “honesty” and where this topic is addressed in Scripture and how it is an essential part of the Girl Scout Promise.
The blessing was for all who are Girl Scouts that they live a life of faith and service.
The Religious Education Lenten Service project is “We pray with our hearts and hands.” As described during the mass, each week the students are assigned a small task to complete as a Lenten sacrifice. Week one they had to pray for someone special and their ‘heart” went on the board. Week two they had to create a greeting card and give it to someone and their ‘hand” went on the board.
This project will continue through the season of Lent and the board will fill up with their special sacrifices.

Following St. Emery’s extensive restoration in 2000, artistic handwoven tapestries from St. Stephen of Hungary Church in Bridgeport were discovered in storage a few years later by Father Pintye.
The tapestries were meticulously handcrafted to commemorate St. Elizabeth’s Altar Society (1917-1937) and to present the Monstrance, which displays the consecrated Eucharistic host. The letters IHS are the monogram of Jesus Christ.
